The objective of this study was to explore the glycemic status of neonates and its associated factors at a tertiary care hospital in Bangladesh. A cross sectional study was conducted among 114 neonates born at Bangladesh Institute of Research and Rehabilitation for Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders hospital in Dhaka between March to June, 2011. Data were collected using interviewer administered close ended questionnaire through face to face interview and review of medical records by a physician adequately trained in hospital data collection. Chi-square tests and Fisher«SQ»s exact tests were performed to explore the association between glycemic status of the neonates, their mothers and factors associated with neonatal glycemic status. Glycemic status of the neonates was significantly associated with gestational age (p=0.014) and birth weight (p=0.044). Glycemic sta tus of the mothers was not significantly associated with glycemic status of the neonates (p=0.409). Pre-term neonates were more hypoglycemic compared to term infants and both gestational age and birth weights were significantly associated with glycemic status of the neonates. Blood glucose should routinely be measured in all high-risk, pre-term, low birth weight neonates to prevent any adverse clinical outcome and long-term complications.
